Covid-19 Panic: Students of tertiary institutions in Calabar fill motor parks to the brim|PICTURES

There is palpable panic in the ancient port city of Calabar the Cross River State capital as Nigerians, majority of whom are suspected to be students of tertiary institutions, are leaving the state in their droves.

Majority of students suspected to be of the University of Calabar, Calabar (UNICAL), University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) formerly Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH), School of Nursing in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), College of Health Technology (COHTECH) are seen to have littered the long stretch of the Etta Agbor axis where we have major transport companies. 

Our correspondent have confirmed that they are have been leaving to Port Harcourt, Lagos, Umuahia, Aba, Abuja, Onitsha and the like states in the Federation. These students are leaving Cross River without a confirmed case of the Virus to states and cities with confirmed cases. 

Last week the federal government of Nigeria through the Ministry of Education directed tertiary institutions to close latest Friday while Unity Schools had till 26 of March to close in keeping with the global social distancing priority in the fight against the pandemic COVID-19. 

On Tuesday, the Cross River State Government directed the closure of all air, water and land borders to the State. 

There are 422,911 cases of COVID-19 globally with 18,905 deaths and 109,143 recoveries. There are 294,863 current active cases, 281,768 (96%) of which are mild conditions and 13,095 (4%) are serious conditions.
